The Motion on “The state of disrepair and total collapse of the Ikot Ekpene -Itu -Calabar Federal highway” sponsored by
Senator Bassey Albert Akpan (Akwa Ibom North East) for the Senate to note with serious concern the dilapidated state and total collapse of the road. The road which was constructed in 1977 is the only access road to other parts of the country including the North, South, West and the East as well as the only link to the East-West road. The Legislator observed that the collapse of the road has virtually cut off the state from other parts of the country, giving a negative impact on trade and investment where it also hinders passage of imported goods from Calabar port to other parts of the South- South and South-East. The motion also recognised that the long neglected road by relevant government agencies expired couple of years back as it has accelerated major portion washed away by 60sq Kilometer. Senator Albert further noted that Akwa Ibom State Government has intervened remedially at the gully erosion portion of the state’s axis to ameliorate the sufferings of the people. The Lawmaker raised concern that the bad state of the road needs urgent attention from the Federal government to avert continuous loss of lives and total disconnection of both States from other parts of the Nation as it remain the only access road. He however strongly called the federal government and Agencies to quickly undertake an ecological intervention. On Ikot Ekpene -Itu-Calabar federal highway to arrest the increasing problems.
