The Chairman Senate Committee on Gas and Senator representing Akwa Ibom North East, Obong Bassey Albert says he is confident the demand for domestic cooking gas in the country will shore up in 2016.
Senator Albert made the observation in a chat with newsmen, during the opening of his constituency office in Uyo, the Akwa Ibom State capital, recently.
He said more Nigerians will be sensitized on the need to turn to use of gas for domestic cooking, which he described as clean, economical and safe.
“Research has shown that a lot of Nigerians die annually as a result of explosions arising from use of kerosene as cooking fuel in homes. It is time to encourage more Nigerians to embrace gas as cooking fuel, in place of kerosene.
“The Senate is working in collaboration with the NNPC and LNG, to see how we can ensure efficient supply of domestic gas to Nigerians at an affordable and appreciable price. The target is to reduce the risk and hazards that accompanies the use of kerosene as cooking fuel.” He added.
Albert, who is also a member of several committees of the 8th Senate, said a massive enlightenment campaign will be in place by all stakeholders in the sector, to bring more people up to speed with the benefits of adopting gas a source of cooking fuel in homes, against other conventional sources.
“In the last couple of months, the demand for gas has shored up, and we believe it will increase further in 2016. This is as a result of the fact that many people have come to a realization that, it is cheaper, safer and economical to employ domestic gas as cooking fuel.” Senator Albert said.
